11 Light Brigade replaced 19 Light Brigade as the lead formation of British forces in Afghanistan on 10th October 2009, when it assumed command of Task Force Helmand. The Task Force Headquarters is based in the Provincial Capital of Helmand, Lashkar Gar, with the major units based in Forward Operating Bases and Patrol Bases across the Province.
The Brigade will be working alongside the United States Marine Corps 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (2nd MEB), nicknamed Task Force Leatherneck, which is also operating in Helmand Province.
We have already built up close links with our US counterparts; although they have taken over the majority of the Province in terms of area, Task Force Helmand is responsible for the majority of the populated areas (representing approximately 70% of the population of Helmand Province), including Lashkar Gar, Nad E'Ali, Gereskh, Sangin and Musa Qa'leh.
Task Force Helmand is predominantly British, although Danish, Estonian and Australian soldiers form a valued multinational element of the Task Force, which is commanded by Brigadier James Cowan OBE.
Task Force Helmand forms part of the International Stabilisation Assistance Force (ISAF), commanded by General McChrystal. This consists of approximately 67,700 troops from 42 nations.
